Snow-covered Trail Awareness
Hikers who venture up canyon trails need to be prepared for lingering deep snow & icy conditions. Don't hike alone, carry extra water, clothes, an emergency kit & cell phone. Tell others your planned route and timeframe. On Sunday, May 25th, a lone hiker lost his way after encountering deep snow on the Bear Creek Overlook Trail. He fell and suffered a broken leg attempting to descend a steep canyon wall. Fortunately, he was able to call 911 on his cell phone. This also provided Search and Rescue, Victor Fire QRU & Ambulance with his location. Due to his precarious situation it was nearly 6 hours before responders could reach him. He was eventually air-lifted to the hospital in Missoula.
